    Facts about Europe

    Holy Headland

Penzance derives its name from the Cornish Pen Sans, meaning holy headland - most likely in reference to a chapel that stood on the western head of the harbour in the middle ages

    The great flood of 2004

In August 2004 Boscastle was devastated by a flash flood caused by freakishly torrential rainfall. It was the worst flood in the village's entire history.

    The Surfing Capital of Britain

Newcastle is often called "The Surfing Capital of Britain" thanks to the not-too-shabby breaks at nearby beaches Towan, Great Western and Tolcarne, Crantock Bay, Watergate Bay, and particularly Fistral Beach, where major international competitions are sometimes held.

    The Royal Mail Packet Station

Between 1688 and 1850, Falmouth was the Royal Mail Packet Station; meaning that all mail going between Britain and the Mediterranean (and later the Americas) was processed here.

The Loire Valley, Far from the Maddening Crowds

Conflans sur Anille is a small village at the entrance to the Loire Valley, and near the little Loir river, far from the heavy tourist zone of the main Loire Valley cities. It lies less than 2 hours drive West of Paris, in the middle of bucolic countryside, between Le Mans, Tours and Chartres, not far from Vendome.

    Attractions

    The Lost Gardens of Heligan

An absolutely beautiful place where you could easily spend an entire day. This is a must-visit for any gardening boffin and if you have to make a choice between here and the nearby Eden Project, this should win hands down!

A beautiful one acre private garden with a huge variety of flowers, and shrubs in different 'rooms' - and also a collection of rare fowl. Delicious home made cakes and drinks are available from a small cafe to enjoy in the garden. Well worth a visit!

A 10 minute ferry ride to the island. Explore the lighthouse and see the views from the summit. A must if visiting in Bally Cotton or touring Ireland.

    Flamingoes

In the winter when there is rain, Flamingoes flock to the Salt Lake and in summer the lake totally dries up to form a salty crust.

What an incredible cathedral! There was a large queue but it went fast and we got to see the breath-taking stain glass windows! Worth visiting!

    Places To Eat

Dolly's Tea Room & Wine Bar

During the day, Dolly's is a traditional tea room serving cream teas and homemade cakes.. By evening, it becomes a wine bar/gin palace/tapas bar with quaint 'tea service' cocktails. Shabby chic repurposed furniture, a great selection of reading material and a dog-friendly environment make this a relaxed and homely place to while away the day or evening.

All food in the restaurant (cafe) is prepared onsite with mainly fresh local ingredients. There are also yummy treats from local specialty and artisan fine-food producers in the farm shop.

The Lost & Found Cafe & Vintage Shop

The front rooms of this historic Chapel Street are a hip vintage store, selling upcycled furniture and collectables. In the back is the cafe and dining areas, continuing the eclectic vintage theme. I didn't get a chance to try anything from the menu, but their coffee and counter food are supurb and the staff are very friendly.

A perfect foodie mix of healthy/vegetarian/organic/seasonal and deliciously decadent. Also has a lovely outside dining area for summer.

    Cycle around Elba

Porto Azzuro is a perfect place to stay on Elba, and you can get to know the island by biking to secluded beaches. The island is only about 200 sq km so once you have your favourite spots you can get there easily by bike.

    Bagni di Lucca

Lucca is a famous walled tourist town, but when you have had enough of the crowds take a 30 minute trip into the hills to Bagni di Lucca. It is cooler, calmer, greener, and you will find charming accommodation. No big hotels, but a few charming pensioni.
