    Cairns Regional Gallery

    Usually has around 5-6 exhibitions on at a time, showcasing either classic or contemporary art from Queensland, Australia or the world. It also has a great permanent collection of regional works. Also worth a visit just for the beautiful historic building.

    The Cairns gardens are thought to be the best in the country. There is a good cafe and also a few art galleries next door. They are open each day from 7.30 till 5.30. It's very easy to spend the whole day here.

    Heart Reef, off the Whitsundays, is a stunning structure of coral that has naturally formed into the shape of a heart. Heart Reef is best experienced from the air by helicopter or seaplane, as visitors are unable to snorkel or dive there due it's protected status.

    The Glass House Mountains are 16 volcanic peaks that rise up dramatically from the coastal planes of eucalypts and pineapple plantations, They were named by James Cook in the early 1800s.

    This is a very unique museum. Man made caves house hundreds of crystals and fossils. It's a bit pricey, but worth it.

    Vivo Bar and Grill Restaurant

    A beautiful place situated right by the beach. The sea breeze floats through the palm trees. One of the nicest settings ever. The food is really good and the menu changes throughout the day. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is a set price dinner menu which i always find a bonus.

    C'est Bon is a lovely french restaurant. The menu is authentic and the wine list extensive. The service was even better than the food. There is an outside seating area with secluded tables away from the foot traffic.

    A nice little cafe set just off the main street surrounded by trees. It has live music on the weekends and a range of boutique ice-creams. It is well known for its steaks.

    This restaurant has amazing views all the way out to the Whitsundays. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. There is an 8 course option for a little over $40.

    A funky cafe with the reputation of being the best in town. Really really good coffee and a menu better than most. The service is quick and there are a few seats street side.

    Visit Lake Tinaroo

    This is a beautiful lake within the Atherton Tablelands. A variety of water activities are available and a couple of good playgrounds for the kids. A great free day out.

    Public Transport

    If staying on the Gold Coast, purchasing a SEEQ card is a fantastic idea, especially for tourists. It is prepaid and can be purchased at 7-eleven stores, train stations, selected tourist information desks and newsagents.Also online at www.translink.com.au. The card entitles passengers to go on all trains, buses and the new tram within Gold Coast.

    National Parks

    The Sunshine Coast region has more national parks than any other region in Queensland. Great Sandy National Park even includes sections on Fraser Island.

    The Cairns region is home to the world's most dangerous bird, the Cassowary, which is a large, flightless bird known for being able to kill dogs and humans if disturbed.
