    South Canterbury Museum

Well worth a visit with informative displays especially about local history. Conveniently located within walking distance of Timaru's main business district and shopping centre. I loved the large stuffed albatross at the entrance.

Te Ana Rock Art is a very high quality museum/heritage experience. The tour of the museum, with the guide answering our questions, was just wonderful. The price of the visit to the cave site was well worth it.

A lovely small Church still used on a regular basis. There are a couple of sheep dog sculptures which add to the atmosphere. Locals are trying to build a foot bridge from the township to the Church to save the drive around.

This is a mind blowing tour. The scenery of the glaciers is some of the best I have ever seen. The staff are very friendly and professional. Had to wait a few days for the weather to be right, but worth it.

Really nice vineyard above the Wairau river, which also offers lunch. A nice fire roars during winter. Well kept grounds which you're free to explore. Worth the several minute drive out of town.

    The Oxford Restaurant

Good vibe, great whitebait, enjoyed chomping my pork belly, good service and advice from our waitress. The orange cake for desert was to die for.

Nice wee cafe. Good coffee, child friendly and pleasant staff. They are known for their soft shell tacos. The pork taco was amazing.

Great friendly atmosphere, with indoor or outdoor dining. Friendly and efficient service. Excellent options for variety of dietary requirements. Prices affordable.

One of the few restaurants in the Tekapo township. It's a bit cheaper than the competition but the food is great. Breakfast seems to be the best deal, I recommend the pancakes.

As described in the Lonely Planet Guide as "possibly the best place on the planet for a coffee". The views from here are amazing amazing. The coffee and food is great and good service. There is a large outside seating area to soak up the alpine views. A must if you're in the Lake Tekapo area.

    Caroline Bay

This is a lovely safe swimming beach. There is a really good playground, toilets, and if you head down there at dusk you see the penguins coming out.

    Private, local hot pools

If you want to put in a bit of effort, there are several hot pools along the river in Hanmer. They are relatively easy to find and the locals are very happy to tell you where the 'secret' pools are.
