The Waipoua Kauri forest is around 45 min to an hour south of Dargaville. There are many amazing walks and it's home to New Zealand's largest tree, Tane Mahuta. This section of bush is the largest remaining piece of native forrest in Northland.

Kai Iwi Lakes are lovely clear water, with trout fishing and good swimming. There are a number of good walks and also cycling tracks. It's quite shallow so a lot safer for children swimming than the west coast beaches.

    Bakehouse Cafe Restaurant

A typical New Zealand bakery. The food is standard but tasty. The fish and chips come topped with an egg which is unusual. Heaps of seating and clean toilets.

A great wee friendly pub about 10 mins drive from Dargaville. The food is tasty homestyle food and large portions. The service is as good as the food.

Wow. How amazing to find real Thai food in Dargaville. This is a family owned restaurant and the wife from Thailand does the cooking. The food is fresh and authentic. There is no bar but it is BYO.

    Stop Over

It only makes sense to leave or arrive in Northland via the west coast. The drive is so scenic and Dargaville is the ideal place to stop.
